Formal court orders? Subpoenas? Vague emails from law enforcement? Pings from regulatory bodies you never knew even existed? Oh, they all spell one thing: government requests!
Yes, #FDroid legal series continues, episode four.
What to do or not do when authorities come knocking: https://f-droid.org/2025/10/07/when-authorities-come-knocking-how-to-handle-requests-for-information.html
Broken links aside (fix incoming), #FDroid raises the case against the #Google developer forced registration once again.
We'll skip the small talk, go read, and better yet, spread this wide and far: https://f-droid.org/2025/09/29/google-developer-registration-decree.html so people are made aware and actions can be taken and #Android is kept truly open!
“Try to minimize what you take with you across the border to only the essentials,” EFF’s @legind advises international travelers in @WIRED. “If you are taking a vacation, do you really need that work laptop with you?” https://www.wired.com/story/1password-travel-mode/
I was really hoping things might get better with GDPR enforcement at its Irish lead regulator, but this is Ireland giving the middle finger to EU data protection and to a democratically governed digital society.

The intersection of the new #Google Developer Verification Policy and the #EU #DMA needs to be pondered.
Article 6.4? Yes, in need of an update, sooner rather than later.
#FDroid keeps showing the way forward: https://f-droid.org/2025/09/22/google-developer-verification-policy-and-the-dma.html
On 21 October the FSFE is participating as intervener in the hearing of the Apple vs.@EUCommission case at the Court of Justice of the EU 🇪🇺 .
This case is a milestone in the enforcement of the #DMA, and it will shape the future of #FreeSoftware and fair digital markets.

We're not only building #opensource, we're also using open source - whether it's Odoo, Nextcloud, Matrix, Drupal. What are your favorite open-source tools? 😎
We've hinted before how the #EU #DMA discussions take place, anyone can see them on video from home, but it's a different thing to be able to roam there.
#FDroid's @eighthave was on the floor and brings us the lowdown.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll say "lawyers!!!", but don't turn your eyes away, this is how the sausage is made, raw, straight from the pipe: https://f-droid.org/2025/09/18/ec-dma-compliance-workshops.html
Don't forget to submit the DMA form! 😄
/PS: Yes, the subtitles grow as you read, we're making a point here!
Android Developer Verification means any developer or organization that wants to publish a mobile app now has to comply with either #Apple's or #Google's Terms of Service. That means two US companies now have a say in the apps that our governments make for their citizens, around the world.

Android published new APIs that seem to confirm that your phone will phone home when you install apps. It will refuse installation when you are offline or developer got blocked by Google:

Part three of our legal series is live, and stuff becomes serious.
We spoke with a range of legal experts, software freedom advocates, and maintainers of mature FOSS infrastructure to understand how others manage legal take-down requests.

It seems that together with civil society and politicians who actually care, this time we managed to prevent #chatcontrol again, luckily. Can we please not have to do that anymore?

We (over 50 scientists) have put (yet another) open letter to the EU commission online, detailing while we do not believe anything has changed in the recent iteration of #chatcontrol proposals that would make it any less unsafe: https://csa-scientist-open-letter.org/Sep2025
Please boost. Next week there will be (another) decision!

Element users on the default http://matrix.org homeserver are currently impacted by a serious database outage (https://mastodon.matrix.org/@matrix/115136245785561439)which will take at least 12 hours to recover - many apologies to everyone impacted. Users on their own deployments are of course unaffected.
Thank you @grote for sharing this.
In addition to telling #Google that locking down #Android is bad, I'd also recommend every app developer to write to the @EUCommission's #DMA enforcement team and tell them that this practically circumvents Article 6(4) of the #DigitalMarketsAct, which was supposed to *enable* 3rd party app (stores).
The EC is discussing the same question with #Apple atm and they have to understand what happens if they let this happen.
