Another quick PSA for the newcomers:

There is no Mastodon.

As in, there is no entity out there called Mastodon that needs to "get it together" or "make things easier."

Every server is a unique collection of hardware and software operated by a unique team of (usually) volunteer humans funded by (usually) donations.

Some days will be smoother than others. We new folks have flooded the network. Cut the volunteers some slack. Better yet, offer support.

@mstine Does it really matter what server you chose if not looking for a niche topic? I joined mas.to when I joined & didn’t put a lot of thought into it, except that it seemed to be social in nature. But now I see most people who came from Twitter are on the mstdn.social.

Will being on mas.to hinder me in anyway from recreating the networks & following the same people I knew from Twitter, because I’m on a different server? What am I missing from NOT being on mstdn.social?

@ArtisticAlexis @mstine So in Mastodon, you can follow accounts across servers; meaning that if you are on mas.to you can follow someone on mstdn.social.
However, in whatever Mastodon app you use there should be a tab (say) called Local Timeline. This shows you activity in your own server. So your Local Timeline is only going to show posts from users on mas.to.

@ArtisticAlexis I forgot something. If your server (mas.to) blocks another server (say, gab.com), then you cannot follow any user who is in the blocked server (IIRC).
