I heard Amazon also banned Parler from their web hosting service because many people were now flocking to Parler, and now the entire platform is down. I have to admit, one thing Gab did right was to use their own server. It's funny if you think about it how easy is to host your own social media site these days, and some people think they don't have many options. The issue here is not that they banned Trump, but the behavior of Big-Tech companies.

Using YouTube to escape the purge is like going up one level on a sinking ship and assuming the water won't get you there

@danie10
MeWe is not open source as far as I know but I find it pretty cool. As long as they respect my privacy I'm fine with it.

@danie10
A friend of mine just messaged me on Signal. He said he installed the app because Elon Musk said so. When I asked him to install Signal he didn't mind me. I've just noticed Google Play Store removed Parler (not Parlor) for not accepting their moderation terms on the platform. I heard Donald Trump is on that platform now.

There is a coup happening.

It's being executed by Google, Facebook, and Twitter.

They believe they should decide for the entire world that we are allowed to say to one another.

@lbry
Facebook is dangerous for democracy these days. All people like me can do is to leave their platform. I'm perfectly fine without Facebook, Twitter and Google.

@lbry
Twitter leftards like to cancel people who don't think like themselves. I'm not surprised.

the "we'll convince everyone the election wasn't stolen by banning everyone from talking about it and then censoring the sitting President of the United States" starter pack

@danie10
I think the time has come to delete WhatsApp too. I'll see how many people I can convince to install Signal. As you know, the problem is not the lack of alternatives.

@danie10
I'm still a begginer in Linux. I've been experimenting with different distributions in 2009 then I switched back to Windows because all my friends were using Yahoo messenger, and Pidgin wasn't really good enough replacement for the native client. This year I became concerned about the privacy issues and I started to consider giving Linux another try. Now it has everything I need except maybe for good gaming compatibility, but I'm not gaming much anyway.

@danie10 hosting your own node is definitely the best option. I'm using a smaller node called friendica.utzer.de because it doesn't block too many nodes. The vast majority of people on Gab and Brighteon are not Nazis and I don't like social media sites deciding for me what people and what content I can interact with. There are some nodes/instances that needs to be blocked with neo-nazis out there but the ones I mentioned are not.

@danie10
I really like the fact that I can mirror my Pixelfed account to Friendica and I can follow Pixelfed users. The RSS feed feature can replace the lack of media outlets on small social media platforms and Friendica is the only one I know with that feature.

@danie10
I'm using Linux desktop but my knowledge about Linux server is very limited. I'll have to learn more about it first. I like Friendica because it has more features than Diaspora and it federates with all the other networks, I never decided what node to use for Hubzilla. Zotum.net is very slow for some reason. Friendica has a small user base and Hubzilla even smaller.

@danie10
Most of my friends and family are far away from me. When I'm going to Europe I'm gonna make Friendica accounts for all of them and force them to use them lol :))))

@danie10
If Facebook and Twitter would federate with the Fediverse nobody would use their platforms full of ads and trackers. Their only advantage is the big user base. I'm glad to see there are also plenty YouTube alternatives, I'm using Lbry the most these days. I've changed my internet using habits lately, for news I'm using an RSS aggregator.

@danie10
For a long time I thought there are no Facebook and Twitter alternatives but looks like Diaspora and Friendica have been around for about a decade. The real challenge is bringing your friends and family to these platforms. At least as a tech enthusiast there are plenty of content creators and open source software projects I can follow on the Fediverse, and I met some new people in the meantime.

@danie10
Bahaha, that's like Google don't be evil motto.

@purism
You guys are doing a great job. I hope my next phone will be a Librem 5.

@danie10
I wouldn't even expect everything on social media to be true.
