So, I’ve been mining #bitcoin. Weird thing to say on mastodon.green, I know. Then again, I did it before I was a member here or, indeed, before Mastodon was even invented.
Back at uni, we had a 3D lab (which implies that the others labs had just two dimensions, which they hadn’t, but maybe they had four and I just didn’t notice) with some pretty beefy hardware. Using a #miningPool I gained a miniscule fraction of a coin, which I promptly forgot about.
It is now worth €650! 😳
@proedie do you live in a country that taxes crypto mining? I'm sure the tax authorities wouldn't come knocking on your door for such a small amount, but worth knowing the rights and wrongs of it all.
@matt Thanks. It’s tax free if you hold it for some time. I think it was one year. I’m not sure. But since I technically owned the crypto for over 15 years, I’m sure I’m fine. 👍
@proedie I won't blame you, if you just want to spend it easily right now. 🙂 But if you want to keep it as some form of #cryptocurrency then #monero is better than #bitcoin due to the #privacy and #fungibility aspects.
