#Tolkien 's concept of the "Rangers" is confusing and unrealistic. Where and how did they live? What was the base of their everyday economy? How could they afford textiles, weapons and armour? Where did they stable their horses?

I'm no expert but here is how I imagine it.

> Where and how did they live?

Camping out in the woods, like Snusmumriken.

> What was the base of their everyday economy?

Hunting.

> How could they afford textiles, weapons and armour?

Mostly they kept using the same old worn things. Maybe once in a while they would trade something from their hunting, like an animal skin, for something they needed.

> Where did they stable their horses?

They were on foot.

Interesting. Eriador is pretty vast and mostly empty after the fall of the northern kingdoms.
I’m not an archaeologist, but my impression was the northern rangers lived like horse people (i.e. Scythians?).

A lot of their weapons and armor were hand-me-downs, er, I mean heirlooms. I also figure they’d be trading with traveling merchants, dwarven or human. Their strong affiliation with elves also likely means they’d be helping them out.

@Morgunin @eliasr The Scythians were steppe pastoralists. How many sheep did Aragorn own?
