"US approves $23bn sale of F-16 war planes to Turkey"
"The sale follows Turkey’s decision to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership"
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/jan/27/us-approves-23bn-sale-of-f-16-war-planes-to-turkey
"Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan initially objected to Sweden’s Nato bid over Stockholm’s perceived acceptance of Kurdish groups that Ankara views as “terrorist” organisations. Sweden responded by tightening its anti-terrorism legislation and taking other security steps demanded by Erdogan."
This is all deeply flawed.

In my opinion this is deeply messed up. #NATO clearly has a dysfunctional way of making decisions.
Is Turkey a reasonably democratic country? No.
Should Sweden be adapting Swedish laws based on the wishes of Erdogan? No.
Should Sweden be labeling certain groups as "terrorists" because Erdogan wants that? No.
All this is wrong.
Question for those who still think it's a good idea for Sweden to join NATO: will you at least admit at the whole process around it is deeply flawed?

@bonifartius the reason, which apparently a large majority of people in Sweden (not me though) think is a good enough reason, is that we are so very afraid of Russia attacking Sweden the same way they attacked Ukraine.
I find it particularly disturbing that Sweden is prepared to humiliate itself so deeply by bowing to Erdogan's wishes. Erdogan says "jump", Sweden responds "how high?" It's pathetic and as a Swedish citizen I'm ashamed of it. But I don't call the shots around here.
NATO
@eliasr it really is disturbing how well fear based propaganda does work and how well people deal with doublethink: we are going to be invaded (war) so let's talk about nothing but war instead of trying saner paths.
most european governments now only are able to talk and think about their technocratic castles in the sky. if reality catches up with real problems, it hits hard and they are totally disoriented. that's the way erdogan etc. do politics, and it apparently works.
would be great if people would be left alone to call the shots of their own life ;)

I wonder how that "large majority" was determined, because among my friends the majority is negative to Nato membership.
One would have expected that a referendum would have been called. But I think "they" learned a lesson with Brexit.
NATO
@niclas you are rights that there is no legitimacy there, there has been no referendum. Nearly all political parties suddenly say that they are now suddenly in favor of Nato membership, but there has not been an election where voters could have a say about it.
re: NATO
@bonifartius @eliasr NATO is Lululemon for the Wallstreet thugs. It exists to bind scared people to American jet salesmen.
NATO
@eliasr Sadly the world that most western countries try to sell us, with "freedom", "democracy" and other stuffs, don't exist. In geopolitics everything is based on interests. If Sweden accepted those terms it's because they believe joining NATO is the best for their interests. The same for Turkey, if they accepted Sweden it's because they think those airplanes will be good for their interests.
I think this explains why the USA speaks bullshit about dictatorships but they're Saudi's allies.
