Why exactly are so many tech people so excited about ChatGPT and the like? Are there any reasons to think the current problems can actually be solved? I have no answers, and this is possibly the most skeptical text I have ever published:

@bjoreman I agree with you.

About this question:

"Why are Microsoft and Google so desperate to wade into this?"

I think a clue to the answer may be found here theguardian.com/technology/202 where they say it will "make shopping easier."

There you go. They look around at the world today and they come to the conclusion that the most important problem to solve is that shopping is difficult, we really need a way to make shopping easier.

So depressing, when thinking about the huge resources invested.

@eliasr Depressing indeed.

And it just struck me (why didn't it happen earlier?!): Of course the people who push for integrating the tech in various places are not the ones who build and/or truly understand it.

"Our search should have AI, AI is hot. Look how well it writes, surely the techies will figure out simple stuff like 'what is true' any day now."
