🚦 We welcome the green light of the European Parliament and the Council to modernise EU driving licence rules, including:
🚗 EU driving licences on digital devices.
🚗 A minimum two-year probation period for novice drivers.
🚗 An EU-wide accompanied driving scheme from age 17.
🚗 Better training and testing to help drivers navigate safely around vulnerable road users.
🚗 Easier licence exchanges for citizens from non-EU countries.
@EUCommission does this mean we can use a website for the license? Or will you mandate that all governments must support all existing Operating Systems to be vendor neutral?
@DiogoConstantino @EUCommission Italy uses a governmental app which, among other things, securely stores a digital copy of the driver license.
I wouldn't be surprised if other countries will adopt the same technique. Works great!
@mikkaels @DiogoConstantino @EUCommission You mean, works great as long as your mobile device runs one of the 2 dominant american mobile operating systems, right? Building government services relying on proprietary closed systems is extremely short-sighted. It should be obvious to everybody by now, especially after the events of last few weeks.
@ondra @DiogoConstantino @EUCommission Well, 2 mobile operating systems are better than 0, especially when they cover 95% of the userbase, so there's that 🤷🏻♂️
@mikkaels I disagree. Two proprietary operating systems are not better than 0. And maybe they have that user based because they are part of monopolies.
@mikkaels Your opinion is also just your opinion.
@DiogoConstantino @ondra @EUCommission Nope. 2 > 0 is not an opinion 😉
@mikkaels do you know that bigger and better are not necessarily the same thing?
@DiogoConstantino @ondra @EUCommission I know. But 2 different mobile operating systems which can support a digital driver's license are better than 0 😉
@mikkaels not if they are proprietary, and closed ecosystems monopolized by those who create it.
@mikkaels @DiogoConstantino @ondra @EUCommission If you think supporting only iOS and Android is fine, then imagine supporting only iOS. I think it's now clearer why this would be bad.
@elgregor @DiogoConstantino @ondra @EUCommission This is why I said that supporting iOS AND stock Android is excellent news. 95% of the market is covered! I'm sorry for those who are being left out, but I really can't blame EU.
