My mobile phone company keeps sending me emails trying to goad me into "upgrading" to an iPhone Duo: a "phone" that starts at $2,000.

There may be things I might spend $2K on, but an iPhone is not one of them.

OTOH, if somebody made a similar device that ran Linux -- not Android, just any Linux distro I chose -- instead and had 5G connectivity... I'd be sorely tempted.

@jzb i so wish there was more choice available for phones.

@skippy Amen.

The thing that frustrates me to no end is that the technology is there for amazing, user-friendly devices that could be most people's sole computer.

All the tech is there so that a phone could be docked with a monitor, mouse, and keyboard and switch to a full desktop -- maybe with additional external storage, etc. -- and then carried around as a phone. Maybe with an additional tablet-type dock for reading, watching movies, etc.

All of that is hamstrung by the device manufacturers, Apple and Google, and so forth. All the pieces are there, but they're intentionally hobbled.

Sorry, I do tend to digress. :-)

@jzb @skippy Hey, we already have that. GNU/Linux smartphones have been there for two decades already and are here to stay. At this point it's just a matter of one's priorities ("am I willing to go against the flow a bit to reap all these benefits?"), not unlike how it was with PCs for a while until it reached some critical mass.

Sent from my GNU/Linux phone:)
