@chetfaliszek If I were running a business (I do not), I would run my own instance from the root domain from which I also run my main web presence. (I hope that's possible.)
This would seem to have some value beyond just verification. For example, if you're on a service hosted by someone else and it gets bought by someone who changes the rules - well, you aren't beholden to them.
Fully open to the notion that I don't fully understand the issues at play, so YMMV.

It is. There are also services that let you outsource actual hosting, such as @mastohost
