People who've done FOSS/self-hosted home automation, what system(s) did you use and how well does your setup work?

Not there yet. Intend to use openHAB on top of KNX. While KNX is not really open, it is standardized, has components by dozens of companies and is some decades older than "cloud", which is a plus.
Not sure how well it would work outside Europe.
