@DashEquals Yep definitely, agree on that.

I've just come to the conclusion personally that Fediverse has become too broad for it to be just "OStatus + ActivityPub". Many of the platforms do other protocols as well and many of the AP based platforms don't federate with each other better than Diaspora with ActivityPub.

@DashEquals (ok maybe I exaggerated the last point, but I'm sure there are some and especially there will be an increase in those once AP adoption grows, since it's a very loose "protocol", more of a framework)

Would it be wrong to say if it's not centralized it is federated?
Email is exactly the example by which I explain to others how Matrix and Mastodon work. Close enough for laymen 😉

@danielst @DashEquals decentralization does not equal federation.

But I agree email is a good example of bare bones federation. I also use it as an example a lot.

But it's a whole other world when looking from the side of being a federation protocol like ActivityPub, Diaspora, Matrix or XMPP. Thus being a part of the #Fediverse I would say no.

@danielst @DashEquals #GitLab is decentralized for example, but it has zero federation (unfortunately!)

Maybe in the future, #ForgeFed looking at you ;)

@danielst @DashEquals Email could easily be used as transport to build a federation protocol tho. I'm sure someone has?
