You wrote that you installed Signal Desktop. My (very short) Signal experience has been that all the people having my phone number in their address book got notified I'd be starting to use Signal (imho against the gdpr) and that my » Signal Desktop stopped working « because I had stopped running the android client. I didn't know that Signal Desktop does not work without a android/ios client regularly logged in to Signal.
