web3 is going just great…
…and for everything else, there’s web0 ;)
A lot can be said about moxie's web3 post.
I'd like to consider just one sentence here.
"People don’t want to run their own servers, and never will."
First part is true. But why?
Even my grandma can install android apps. Apps have become so easy because big tech pushed for it to be. Big tech never developed the concept of set-top box-like homeservers, not in their interest. If pushed like apps, homeservers would be easy too!
People don't want to? They never were given a proper chance to!
So apparently Fortinet listed the web0 manifesto as a phishing site (likely because some crypto techbro got butthurt). A lovely member of the community saw it and contacted them to have it fixed. And now it’s listed under Information Technology.
Folks, please. Stop assuming that it's okay to introduce advanced features to Linux desktops that a normal user won't understand because "only geeks use Linux anyway". Believe it or not, even within the "geeks", there will be those who don't understand these concepts because they were simply never interested in them, and are therefore completely excluded.
Be inclusive. Design software that is simple, easy, and intuitive to use. Software that doesn't require a PhD to know how to use it.
Wow, #fosdem2022 has a dedicated track for FOSS on mobile devices: https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/foss_on_mobile_devices/
If you are interested in #linuxphones you should check out the schedule. There's so much going on in the #linuxphone space right now. 😎
I feel like @postmarketOS or @danctnix is the future for me (still running a de-googled android right now though).
web0 manifesto
“…web0 is web3 without all the corporate right-libertarian Silicon Valley bullshit.”
Sign your name and join me in starting the year as you mean to go on: without tolerating any bullshit.
Happy New Year! :)

Belgium wanted to pass a law that would have forced companies to include an encryption backdoor. But the immense backlash that the government faced made them stop. Read on our blog how we fought the law & won! 😀💪 Let's keep fighting for #privacy.

I hate it when this happens. Parts on my old #Nikon D7000 got, uh, how shall I describe it... Icky 'n sticky. 😐 #cameras #dslr #technology
Been in storage a long time.

Yeah, I didn't do any* #photography since. Just took it out today coz I thought I'd bring it to the new place.
Anywayz, same thing happened to my old Sony Ericsson #phone's wireless headset long ago. Stopped using it coz it got icky and sticky.
I'm gonna give it a name: #techSweat 🤪
Advice? Solutions?
Wondering what it would take to have a non-Google phone with @GrapheneOS on it? How realistic would it be to expect this in X years?
(I love what they’re making but I will not give Google a single cent if I can help it.)

Also, this dialogue really needs a redesign. Again, we should not be parroting the design decisions of trillion-dollar corporations like Apple.
Sideloading (or otherwise known as installing) apps from the web should not be demonised. We should be looking at webs of trust, etc.
In the case of an OS like elementary OS, with a tiny team, there is no reason to put Developer X’s review/trust above Developer Y’s review/trust.
Going to have a think about how this can be made less scary…
Someone just came into the Pinephone chatroom to share a "snake game"... claiming it was their first attempt at making a game.
Problem was, this was *malware*. Created using bashfuscator. 😈

Just like you don’t have to use git with GitHub, you don’t have to use Flatpak with Flathub or your distribution’s app store. You can host Flatpak repositories yourself.
This is an excellent short tutorial showing you how: https://blogs.gnome.org/alexl/2017/02/10/maintaining-a-flatpak-repository/
lol a news site started just selling ads themselves instead of using targeted bullshit and made so much more money https://www.wired.com/story/can-killing-cookies-save-journalism/
