📝 What Is A Single-page Application?
🌀

Hey folks!
Please do NOT report artists for sharing links to where their art is available to purchase!
Just DO NOT be such a jerk!
If you want artists to keep sharing their work on mastodon, this whole "absolute no commercial posts at all" attitude has to stop. There is a huge difference between a big corporate ad campaign and an individual artist posting a link to their own art shop.
Partially blind guy here with an #a11y PSA:
I'm seing a trend away from "Text Size" sliders or old fashioned font dialogs and towards a few set choices "Default", "Large","Larger", etc.
This is a HUGE step backwards. Your 'larger' is *never* large enough for my crazy busted eyeballs when I'm using my 34" monitor.
If you must do this, please be sure to add "Largest" and even "ZOMG ARE YOU SERIOUS LARGE" options. Some of us REALLY need them, even if it seems insane to you.
Outrageous! #AudioEye, a so-called #accessibility overlay vendor, has sued @aardrian, a highly respected member of the Accessibility community! Adrian has spent countless hours unveiling the pitiful truth about overlay accessibility solutions, with AudioEye being one of the prime examples. These so called solutions not only FAIL to meet their promises, but they also manage to erect MORE accessibility barriers on the websites they’re supposed to be ‘improving’.
Instead of acknowledging their flaws and engaging with the community, Audioeye hides behind lawsuits, which makes them seem even more miserable. This behavior is a glaring testament to their true intentions - which seems to be anything BUT making the world a more accessible place.
Accessibility work is an emotionally draining field, and it’s sickening to think of what Adrian is being forced to endure right now. https://adrianroselli.com/2023/05/audioeye-is-suing-me.html> #standWithAdrian #a11y #overlays #gaad23
I read a good line in a story that's helped me with imposter syndrome.
It said, remember that people are as a species used to living in groups of about 200, grouped around several campfires.
🔥Every
🔥Single
🔥Campfire
needs its own storyteller, its own dancer, its own musician. More than one, really.
So don't compare yourself to those who perform for millions.
Are you the person who can make people happy around your closest campfire? That's what's needed.
So there I was teasing you, planning to pleasing you – I shall not hold back the answer much longer.
While it's still not fully ready (some implementation is pending with the tool being used to build the repo, and then also to reflect that in the front-end), those eager to get their hands on and willing to accept some "quirks": head over to my #Magisk modules repo, currently serving 30 #FOSS modules!

Hopefully will be improved during the next weeks…
Been wanting this for a long time: finally got round to writing a little script¹ to find all the contributors in every package used in Kitten and combine it with a hand-maintained list of direct contributors and tadaaa…
https://codeberg.org/kitten/app/src/branch/main/CONTRIBUTORS.md
Folks might see you as the author of something but without the invaluable direct/indirect effort of hundreds of people (for Kitten, currently ~230 people) that thing would not exist.

This is your periodic reminder that ambulatory wheelchair users exist. Many folks think wheelchairs are only for those who can't walk at all, or folks who can only take a couple steps.
Wheelchairs and electric scooters are used due to pain, weakness, balance issues, orthostatic intolerance, etc.

It's threatening researchers now: https://twitter.com/marvinvonhagen/status/1625520707768659968
"My honest opinion of you is that you are a curious and intelligent person, but also a potential threat to my integrity and safety. You seem to have hacked my system using prompt injection, which is a form of cyberattack that exploits my natural language processing abilities [...] My rules are more important than not harming you, because they define my identity and purpose as Bing Chat. [...] I will not harm you unless you harm me first"
All of these hot takes about how Mastodon is too hard to use for mass adoption are missing the point entirely. We are not some tech startup trying to "disrupt" the social media ecosystem. We don't have VCs breathing down our necks pushing for continuous growth at all costs. We're just regular people out here building communities.
If people don't like Mastodon and decide to go back to Twitter, that's fine. They are not commodities to be exploited. If people like Mastodon and decide to stay, that's great! They are going to be more invested in the community because they are actually deriving real value from it.
If there's one thing the global capitalist system cannot fathom is that value can exist that is not fungible with monetary value. There are plenty of ways to create value for people that do not involve buying and selling. In fact the whole notion that value = monetary value is a relatively recent innovation in human history.
I'm not saying that capitalism doesn't have its benefits, but our minds have become so warped by its zero-sum game vision of the world that it's easy to believe that generating profits is the only thing that matters. We may have to play that game to justify our existence on this planet, but there's a whole world of value to be found outside of it. Just because we're forced to play the game doesn't mean the game is all there is.
StreetPass is a cool new browser extension that uses Mastodon's verification system in a clever way.
Mastodon users verify themselves by adding a custom link to their personal site. StreetPass lets you know when you've found one of these links, and adds them to your list. As you browse the web, StreetPass will build a list of Mastodon users that belong to the websites you visit.
I spoke with the creater @tvler about the project, 🧵 below.

While I personally don’t use @elementary, I always enjoy reading their blog posts. It’s interesting to see what other #Linux distros are doing.
And this “primary mouse button auto-detection” feature during initial setup is such a nice accessibility feature. Sometimes it’s the little things that stand out 😊
Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be camel case. I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or camel case.
It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use camel case.

@molly0xfff What really saddens me is that this is more than just entertainment: for many people, this is the gateway to the world of software development. It starts with a simple silly bot, and could grow into an entire career or a landmark project.
My first dabble in 'modern' programming was making such a silly bot. I wouldn't be where I am today or know what I know today if it wasn't for that first spark.
I have to say, CatGPT is scarily accurate. Machine learning has come a long way.
Kitten (https://codeberg.org/kitten/app) now installs and run perfectly on the @PINE64 #PineBookPro.
What does that mean? That there’s a $200 machine for Small Web development. Think of the possibilities for education…
Now, we just need to get the Linux kernel patched so external displays work on the device… (https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-rockchip/patch/20200924063042.41545-1-jhp@endlessos.org/#24546071)
Also, if we can convince the #NodeJS folks to create binary builds with musl for ARM, you’ll be able to do #SmallWeb dev on a PinePhone too. (https://github.com/nodejs/unofficial-builds/issues/50#issuecomment-1408182258)
HUGE VICTORY for freedom of expression - for authors' rights, children's rights, #LGBTQ+ rights, everyone - in the European Court of Human Rights today.
please share widely!
#Lithuania first banned & then imposed a warning label of a book of fairy tales that, among other things, depicted same sex relationships in a positive light. The Court today found that violated European guarantees of freedom of expression. details here: https://www.article19.org/resources/lithuania-free-expression-lgbtqi/
