This is incredibly fascinating! Mastodon is just one aspect of the Fediverse. There are other open source services too!

@Memeghnad you can also check out https://riot.im/ for a WhatsApp replacement. It does almost everything whatsapp does (chat, group chat, video and voice calls)
And it's federated like Mastodon!

@anandv96 @Memeghnad I can also recommend Threema. It is paid (3EUR for lifetime license) but they provide mechanisms to verify their claims.

I prefer matrix/riot because it's open source & federated and the developers have a nice plan laid out for it.

There is also librem.one (my mastodon&matrix providers) from the creators of the librem 5 phone and the librem line of laptops, privacy respecting linux devices.
