Personally I have to say that I really like the absence of quote tweets here - I left Twitter a few years ago because I got so sick of all the hatred and bile I was seeing all the time, although I only followed decent people, because they constantly quoted it to draw attention to it. For me personally just constantly being reminded of the existence of shitty people in the world didn't really feel like it was doing anything to make the world better, 1/several

Just making me feel scared, depressed and honestly a bit dirty for reading it. HOWEVER it's only since reading a lot of discussion of the issue here that I realise that a lot of people do find them a helpful safety tool, and my concern is that on Mastodon the absence of that functionality seems to have come about as a result of the opinion of one person rather then a consensus decision of multiple users 2/?

So much of how Mastodon works is designed for decentralisation, personalisation and accountability. I can personally decide whether to show sensitive media by default, hide specific words, chose to join an instance with or without a home timeline or that federates or doesn't with particular other instances. I'm not minimising the engineering challenges here, but should we not maybe be treating quote tweets the same way?
