An AI test from 1971 shows you need to adjust your #ChatGPT expectations.

In 1971, Terry Winograd devised the Winograd Schemas, simple sentence understanding tasks that require the use of knowledge and commonsense reasoning. Humans understand them easily. ChatGPT... not so much.

Did you know? Half of all U.S. states, 25 to be exact, carry Indigenous names. Today we will be taking a look at the 25 states and the meanings of their names. They will be listed in alphabetical order under this post.

Fun fact - #layoffs are a social connection amongst businesses, and do little (to nothing) to actually help companies recover during economic downturns.

Don’t take my word for it - this comes from years of study and scholarly research:

@CrowderSoup Ooh, GoToSocial sounds like an interesting project. I've only got Pihole, PiVPN (wireguard & openVPN), cloudflared (upstream DNS encryption), and a gopher server on my RPI3.

I wrote 8,000 words on Mastodon, Twitter, and owning your data—from the perspective of someone that worked at Twitter for nine years.

Twitter has blue and yellow checkmarks now huh? *sigh*

And in other #hacking news: “Twitter data dump: 200m+ account database now free to download: No passwords, but plenty of stuff for social engineering and doxxing” :-( by #TheRegister theregister.com/2023/01/05/twi #edtechSR #security

So many years we fought with the Twitter API. I love that if you want an RSS of someone's Mastodon feed, you just add .rss at the end of their URL. Open Web, my friends. hachyderm.io/@shanselman.rss

Mastodon is a terrible thing.

It’s so nice here I don’t want to go and do anything ….

@pallenberg
Totally. It's so much nicer here in the Fediverse.

Okay, we know... We made fun of Adobe when its cloud service went down. We've made fun of Corel Painter and Clip Studio. We joined in the protest No AI Generated Images protest. We made our stance on NFT's clear. But this is beyond making fun of. This is EW! EW! EW!

Woo hoo! Figured out how to code my RSS feed to have both news database listings and image gallery updates! adamlein.com/rss.php

My kids are watching this classic scene from Sesame Street and are just as confused as the Yip Yips. They have absolutely no conception of what this thing is. The humor of the scene has truly come full circle.

@KimCrayton1 Some instances have DMs disabled completely, which is awesome. Fediverse should be all public. Here's a fork that disables DMs: source.puri.sm/liberty/host/sm

@cbyrd01 Keepass is my favorite. No server sync (unless you want to make your own or use cloud storage), huge ecosystem of client apps on literally every platform, can be used with Yubikey or password files, can be 100% offline, can be used with a web-based client, etc.

@jr 1Password is a centralized service just like LastPass, so it could easily have the same problem of getting compromised on their servers someday. BitWarden lets you host your own server and put it behind a VPN for more security. Or you can use Keepass database files and sync in any number of ways.

Glad I switched to Keepass back when eWallet didn't support Windows Phone 7. The ecosystem is so much more diverse and sustainable. @keepassxc
