@ariadne
I know. That was an example. It has to do with cognitive ease.
@mothdust
I think I'd call that an advantage since you can choose what you like. Would you rather choose a car that fits your preference and works on all the roads, or would you rather Elon make all car related decisions for you? :)
@ariadne
Efficient use of cognitive energy. If you've been using the Windows 95 UI for a quarter century, spending energy learning something that doesn't significantly improve efficiency is a waste of time and brain cells.
@shanselman Ha! Definitely using the Fediverse more from now on!
@jmes
That does sound pretty useful! I'm still waiting for decent typography controls to come to CSS: https://bookofadamz.com/css-needs-better-typography-controls/
Yeah okay, mstdn.social is now blocked in #China
No problem! We got a fully working #Tor address: https://c6usaa6obkiahck7rkn2phbffb3strd375pfpxmawuexnmectjizyjad.onion/about
@ltning
Ah, that's a good point. Maybe some integration with Matrix. My contact metadata here is a link to a form on my website which I can process any way I choose to and doesn't give anything away other than my already public website URL. Personally, I'd much rather process private messaging from all electronic sources in a single place.
@patricia
@lostprototype
It makes a WordPress user account into a Fediverse account where all your blog posts on WordPress appear as Fedi posts via ActivityPub. So you should be able to follow @adamz in any Fedi app.
@shanselman @being @nextcloud
@shanselman
You should make an instance for all the employees at Microsoft. Add some Active Directory integration too. ;)
@ChristineBirchwood Well, Discord is still centralized and accepts $$ from Tencent (Chinese Communist Party.) The Fediverse isn't owned by anyone and anyone can make their own instance; so it's far superior from a "no abuse from dictators" perspective.

@patricia There shouldn't be DM/private messages on the Fediverse at all in my opinion! Just add a contact link to your profile metadata fields. Nobody needs more messaging apps: https://bookofadamz.com/the-smartest-messaging-method-is-not-a-segregated-mess-of-whatsapp-signal-telegram-sms-slack-teams-facebook-instagram-wechat-etc/
@lostprototype @shanselman @being @nextcloud Ooh, nice!! I have the ActivityPub plug-in on Wordpress (https://bookofadamz.com/author/adamz/), but it's buggy and not as good as other Fediverse servers. I can't even figure out how to accept followers on that Fedi account.
@Moon Is the next eternal September happening in November?
Note that if you're on a server with multiple columns, and want a simpler style feed experience, look for "Enable advanced web interface" in Preferences and uncheck the box.
(checkbox check equals columns)
Alternatively if you currently do not have the columns style (and want columns to get the most of the web browser's window in full screen, for example), then check the box :-)

Thinking of creating your own #Fediverse instance?
I've just overhauled the table on this wiki page to show you what your options are for managed hosting.

@extinct Ok, I will try.
@Kclemson Glad I found you here from the Windows Phone days! Ex-MSFT though? When did that happen?
@shanselman It's what all social networks should have been. Imagine now if things like LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube implemented ActivityPub and started federating.

DMs don't work, so don't bother.
