Hilarious fact: On Mastodon, the "Publish!" button used to be known as the "Toot!" button, but @Gargron changed this because he didn't like that the word "toot" was a synonym for "fart".

And now you know why posts here are known as "toots"!

Apparently, the story goes that a YouTuber offered @Gargron lots of cash if he'd refer to posts as "Toots".

So he did.

However, because English is not his first language, he only realized what "toot" was slang for at a much later time.

I personally have no problem with the word "toot" as Mastodon's version of "tweets".

It adds whimsy and fun to the app.

But also, people can get over references to bodily functions.

After all, lots of fellows in the world proudly call themselves "Dick" instead of "Richard".

What I like is that the project is customizeable enough that if you can convince your admin to change it, they can change it to whatever you like.

Pasting into the custom-css panel:

---
.compose-form__publish-button-wrapper button {
text-indent: -9999px;
line-height: 0;
}

.compose-form__publish-button-wrapper button:after {
content:'Toot!';
text-indent: 0;
display: block;
line-height: initial;
}
-------

Will change it back to Toot, but you could also write Boing! or Preach! or Rant! or Interject!

@pre @atomicpoet Ooh, can we feature-request an "Additional CSS" field in the preferences for each person's profile? :)

If it's just for you then there's browser plugins.
