When a nation "bans #TikTok", it is not really banning TikTok. It is banning its *citizens* from TikTok. The "ban TikTok" movement is a pro-#censorship movement.
I'm pro-#FreeSoftware, so I'm now in an awkward position. I have to both condemn and defend TikTok.
Condemn, because it's an awful #proprietary #spyware that has direct connections to an oppressive regime and I think it should not be used by anyone ever.
I also feel obliged to "defend" it in that I hate #Internet censorship.
@tomstephens Ah yes, the "Nooo, we don't want to #ban #TikTok, we only want to buy it so that we #control it! (But if you refuse to sell, we still ban it)" excuse. 🤡
They don't advocate for #FreeSoftware or strengthening user #privacy. 👎
Their problem with TikTok is NOT that it's a danger to #freedom and privacy. Their problem is that THEY don't control it. 🤦
If their plan works and TikTok is under US control, IT WOULD STILL BE #PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE! 😡
