Why is the general public so against encryption? It's literally the thing that keeps them safe in so so many places, I assume it's because of bad people but surely common sense would say if one site removed encryption these people would go elsewhere?

@immychan tangentially related: i try to apply most arguements for encryption to firearms and see if it changes how I feel about the latter.
While at first the analogy feels shakey at first, encryption allows bad actors to keep illegal activity secret and thus continue to perpetrate it. So there is an arguement for encryption being able to hurt people, similar to firearms.
