Found a well-camouflaged friend while out inspecting the ferns and hostas (most of which seem to have taken). Didn't have my gloves or I woulda been yanking the invasive ivy. Still haven't gotten Virginia creeper to replace it.
@thrrgilag Pretty sure the previous owners/residents planted it on purpose, but the yard was feral for quite awhile (it's heavily wooded, so mostly moss and occasional sedge) so it's anybody's guess. I ripped out the stuff that was going up a tree last year (which is where it goes to seed and really causes trouble) but only got about half the ground vines cleared. Luckily it's very sandy here (good ol' Pine Barrens) so it's generally easy to uproot.
