/ We should listen less to celebrities, and more to students & kids living with their parents. (And even more to successful lifestyle entrepreneurs).

Why? The tradeoff between time, privilege, and success.

/ Advice is most relevant if it comes from people who face the same challenges & problems as you. Celebs face very different problems than most ppl - they don't have the problems of limited budget, and they have the extra problems that come with being celebs.

/ But normal ppl mostly don't have the time to research and reflect (on little problems or societal ones). Like you, they're too busy worrying about mortgage payments, the cost of college, their parent's chronic health problems, and surviving each day for deep contemplation.

/ So normal people are too busy to give advice, while celebs are too out-of-touch. The ideal is ppl with normal problems, yet also time to think deeply. Kids living in their parent's basement are exactly this! They don't have drivers or concierge doctors, but they do have time.

/ If you're like me, you feel some misgiving at this idea. To understand why, we have to bring in another factor: success. We want advice from the successful, both for good reasons (it's more likely to be good advice), and bad (status by association).

/ If you value independence or marriage & family (which you should), then adult kids living at home are not yet successful, which diminishes their advice value.

So then we have to ask - who is successful, has time, but faces the same challenges as most people?

/ To me, this sounds like a successful lifestyle entrepreneur (ie passive income, FIRE, small business exit). They turn extra income into extra time, yet don't have celeb-level resources or problems. So they're the ideal group for normal people like you to get advice from!

/ What do you think? Are there other key factors to consider in what kind of people you get advice from? Can you think of other groups that have all three factors of time, normal person problems, and success? Comment and discuss!
