I'm sort of sad that we didn't see an Ubuntu Core Desktop in 2024. I feel like that will have the potential to be a true mainstream desktop once it's finished. It's hard to argue that Ubuntu itself still captures the first time Linux user crowd, and something borderline unbreakable would keep them using it.

Maybe next year.

@zak I don't know much about the way Ubuntu Core is structured, but I definitely know that an immutable option is VERY important and I really do feel like there should be some prioritization around an atomic and immutable upgrade here.

Things like Silverblue have shown us how great an incredibly competent, immutable desktop experience can be.

@schykle Yep! This is exactly the way I think about it. It'll be crucial to the future of Linux on the desktop.

@zak @schykle I have been daily driving Vanilla OS for some months now and just super happy with it. I think there was a gap of exactly what you both identified, and Vanilla does a great job helping to fill it

@mpanhans They're doing good work, but they also are a bit further behind on some of the core stuff like the kernel due to being based on Debian. My tendency to use newer hardware will clash with older kernel versions being shipped.

It's why I can't use things like Deepin, either. Sometimes it works... until it doesn't.

@schykle Makes sense, yes always trade-offs. They are on Debian Sid though so it is reasonable for a lot of use cases. I’m using it on a Framework laptop with the AMD chip, which is fairly new-ish
