What if we invested millions in own (FLOSS / community / public) infrastructure instead of paying Zoom? https://netzpolitik.org/2021/private-infrastruktur-fuer-die-lehre-so-viel-bezahlen-hochschulen-fuer-zoom/
@lightweight @becha I feel like it’s such an obvious and smart decision. I personally like Jitsi as a zoom replacement but whatever the application it is very clear to me that open source digital infrastructure is this massively under-funded public good
@lightweight @mpanhans there’s even more than 2 ;) #RIPE & IETF are using MeetEcho : https://www.ietf.org/how/meetings/technology/meetecho-guide-participant/ which is FLOSS : https://github.com/meetecho ; we choose it for members meetings because z00m is banned in some countries , & because it scales to large conferences (1k+) & it has pro support.
Yesterday I hosted a videoconference using #Jitaimeet, very nice app, everything went smoothly. A couple of hours later, guy who did not attend the call writes to the group
I think we should use a more known platform for the meeting like zoom and google meet.
Followed by another chorus from another guy:
Agree. Zoom is good. Google is good
Looks like besides corporate publicity, those of us who value #FOSS also need to address fixed mindsets.
@arinbasu1 @lightweight @mpanhans @becha that's sad
@mpanhans @becha we're fortunate that the #FOSS world has created (at least) 2 viable video conferencing platforms. My advocacy for BigBlueButton is based on it being designed for large groups (up to hundreds) - with specific tools making it ideal in an education context - whereas, in my experience, Jitsi is focused on much smaller groups (<10) and without the ed-specific-features... But that impression might no longer be current.
