Back in 2004-2005 when I lived in Chicago, my daily train ride took me past a giant billboard for a talk radio station. The billboard just said "Liberals Hate It!".

That's it, that's the sales pitch. Is it good? Is it bad? Who cares, as long as liberals hate it, right? Cuz being a "conservative" isn't about policies, it's a tribal identity based on white grievance and opposition to the media.

People are acting like this is something new to the trump-era GOP, but it has deep roots.
