We need a setting where #mastodon won't display images above a certain brightness at night/in dark mode.

I'm not against having this built-in by any means, but check out this CSS file: m0xEE.Net/pub/night.css
It dims all images except the ones you hover your cursor over. You can alter it to suit your needs and inject it into CSS of your instance with uBO.

@m0xee that's neat for desktop! Not sure how it'd work on mobile other than me using a browser for masto.

@Kancept
Ha-ha-ha, yeah — I'm mostly a desktop guy myself so I tend to forget about the "app" side of things.
Using a browser is an option, but last time I checked I didn't like Masto's mobile web UI — sidebar on the right taking too much screen space and other minor details like that. Again it's possible to fix with CSS injections, but using a dedicated app is more comfy for a lot of people and integrating proper "night more" would sure be welcome!

@m0xee yeah, I actually use #Tusky on the android side, and #Tuba on the desktop (Linux) side.

@Kancept This option in Tuba will darken images when dark mode is enabled

@Kancept
Some of the computers I use are… I can of course call them retro to make it sound cooler, but in fact they are just old and anemic — so I mostly go for minimalism 😄
I like using tut — check it out if you like TUI software: github.com/RasmusLindroth/tut/
Or Bloat frontend: git.freesoftwareextremist.com/ — which uses basic HTML with optional and very minimal JavaScript, it even runs on my old Windows 10 Mobile phone!

@Kancept
For both I have my own sets of patches to make them look… less like a blast from the past — with colour emojis you can spice up any UI! this is what tut looks like on an old ThinkPad of mine: social.librem.one/@m0xee/11298
And here is Bloat on my old Lumia: social.librem.one/@m0xee/11221
As tut doesn't display images — but you can invoke your favourite image view if you like, and Bloat is self hosted — so I can do whatever I want with CSS, I'm quite comfortable browsing the Fediverse at night!
