Half of music theory is just signal processing in disguise accidentally discovered by artists instead of engineers. I shit you not, having studied some basic signal processing in the uni gives me a much better insight into music.

In disguise? There are whole books about
In the times when most of these discoveries were made signal processing didn't exist and even most of the required mathematic apparatus in a broader sense. These artists were quite on par with "engineers" of their time 😄

@m0xee true that. What I meant is, the way it is studied today doesn't mention signal processing or maths for the most part.

@newt
Yeah, I also find this approach kinda "legacy" and just like @scathach I was finding lots of the things about how music theory is taught at traditional music schools confusing for the technically minded people. People who… let's say just enjoy playing instruments take these things for granted, but you sit there and wonder — why is it like that?

Turns out, there is always a good explanation, these teachers just don't give it to you, maybe because for them this is "too complex" — but for people with a different mindset it only makes sense 🤷
