Heh, so a friend gave me a Radeon Vega 64 card to use in my Dell PowerEdge T630 server (hackintosh virt machine plan) but as I got it slotted in, I realized.. I have no power for it!

Further research says I need to find a specialized Dell GPU PIB (power interposer board) and cables. Yeesh. So now I have a video card in the server with no power!

Enh, ebay came through, but I need to find the right cables because I'm assuming the boards use some whacky Dell propietary shit.

@Toxic_Flange
To plug GPUs into old Mac Pros you had to use just special cables that were available on AliExpress for pennies, but there was always an option to use a passive converter from Molex connector to power the GPU, using a power board seems like even more trouble — can't you do something similar and draw some power from optical or hard drives?

It's also important to keep in mind that the PSUs have to pack enough power to power that GPU — server ones usually have plenty reserved, but if your GPU starts drawing more than they can provide under heavy load, you motherboard might get fried 😱

@m0xee I’ll take another look at the molex but it’s a 300w gpu. I’m good for server psu, dual 750s and I got a spare single 1000w on hand but I’m also running very low power CPU and only doing a single VM so far in proxmox. Thanks for the info!
