Sometimes, all it takes to abandon Whatsapp is a single person refusing to use it.

You don't have to be THAT indispensable — when I didn't have a phone capable of running WhatsApp and people from the groups I used to be in just asked one of those who could contact me otherwise to ask me for my opinion. It worked fine. But if people want to contact you directly, they should use whatever you've comfortable with — that's just normal 🤷

And you don't have to MAKE everyone switch — that's an asshole behaviour, but they don't have to make you use what you've uncomfortable with either.
People in the case from the original post have switched from one single-vendor thing to another one, WhatsApp isn't that bad cryprographically, Signal just has better reputation, but all in all it's not such a big step up IMO
