Yep, and I don't consider him stupid in the slightest. I'm pretty sure they also have something on some of the officials in other countries and they have to cooperate, and Snowden is practically confined to Russia and unlikely to be even able to leave soon — I'm sure he didn't expect it to escalate to this point.

But can't they just… you know, say: "Okay, I'll make this statement, but let me change the text so I would sound like myself, not like I'm saying ford for word what I'm being told, so I won't sound like I'm being held hostage".
Remember Musk using the wording American would be very unlikely to use, unless he was just given a lesson of alternative history?
