Is this a common problem? I don't remember experiencing anything like that, but I didn't have macs with built-in card-readers — and with USB ones it works like in any other system: the partitions that are supported get automatically mounted and an icon appears on the desktop, if they use file system that isn't supported, it gives you a prompt offering to initialise/format it.

Sony was also among the companies, other than Apple, that adopter the Firewire interface, although they've been using a slimmed-down version of it, but it was still present in most of their laptops. And among the primary uses for that was transferring data from camcorders — maybe that was their designated way for doing this, not swapping cards.

I've even been using my Mac Pro to copy samples even to a SmartMedia card — to use it with Korg drum machine until I sold it, no issues at all 🤷
Sony being mentioned in this context is quite interesting — because Sony and SD cards is a relatively new development, as we all know, they've went quite a mile promoting their own proprietary Memory Stick — even in the phones.
