@drewdevault As I understand it, that was the plan - matrix.org was to be super popular only while they were still debugging the federating bits of the protocol and server software, and users should eventually spread more evenly across servers.

I'd prefer if they at least closed new user registrations on matrix.org, though.

Most people are brainwashed by FAANG into thinking that one platform equals one central server, so new users still gravitate towards matrix.org, sadly.

@ticho @drewdevault no, most matrix apps default to matrix.org. then, even if you want to switch, they will not show you any directory of homeservers, just a text input for a domain

@lnl @drewdevault Yep, that too is a problem. And IIRC it was the reason the matrix.org gave when asked about disabling new registration. Sort of a reverse chicken and egg problem.

@ticho @lnl @drewdevault I was looking into selfhosting a Matrix server. From what I've been told, the system demands of an isolated Matrix server are higher than for most messaging services, and it escalates rapidly if you federate and worse the more connections you have, which strongly discourages decentralization.

It is a major problem! I would gladly switch to my own homeserver if someone donates the hardware for it 😂
