@hj@shigusegubu.club @a1ba@suya.place what's the tldr behind why webp is bad?

Something about Israeli tracking you?

All I've seen is that it does animated images better than apng and gif lol

@000a @a1ba it's only slightly better than jpeg/(a/m)png/gif and sometimes performs worse in terms of perceived quality, but it nonetheless was forced by Google onto everyone because it made google dot com load 22ms faster, and for a while ONLY chromium-based browsers supported is. To make matters worse, google uses same reasoning people pushed against webp to push against other formats like FLIF "It's not that better than webp".
@hj @000a @a1ba its kinda good because you can do lossy transparent animated images and they are a lot smaller
@Moon @000a @hj @a1ba That's actually bad. The upper limits on size/color depth/etc made people a lot more creative with gifs than they're being now with this crap.
People used to hate gif with it's software patents and all that represented, but after a decade of modern webshit fixing what wasn't broke it's fairly clear that people hadn't seen anything yet.
@Moon @000a @hj @a1ba but for how long? most corpsites (twitter being the biggest offender) convert gifs to webm automatically whether you like it or not now
@WALFTEAM @000a @hj @Moon animated image encoded as a video without an audio track makes more sense than half-baked Google formats
@a1ba @000a @WALFTEAM @hj this is in fact what i do because i can reduce a gif to 10% by converting it to mp4
Follow

@Moon
Because most people make GIFs by converting videos in the most straightforward way with ffmpeg without putting any effort at all into optimizing them after šŸ˜†
