If you happen to get your hands on an older computer, say between 10 and 20 years old, do you

Hey, all of my computers are of that age. Every single one of them. And I don't even consider them old 😂

@m0xee

What are you, crazy? Go out right now and buy a new Macbook Pro! And a Mac Pro to use at home! And since you're at the Apple store anyway, why don't you pick up an iPhone 15 Pro Super Mega Max as well, and of course an iPad and an Apple Watch to complete the ecosystem. Airpods are optional for now, but I'd highly appreciate it if you got a pair too. Or two, one for home and one for on the go.

You can't just keep using your old hardware. Think about the economy! Hardware manufacturers are struggling because of people like you!

You throw away that old crap right now, I don't care if it still works and fits your needs, and you buy everything new. And from now on, you do that *every single year*!

Understood? ;)

@82mhz Funny thing is, there are a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro among these computers 😆
They were top of the line models in their time and still aren't bad in terms of performance, I don't do "AI" thingies or 4k video editing — other than that, I can't think of anything I can't do with my computers. I mean, I wouldn't mind if they had hardware h265 decoding and I could really benefit from more power-efficient CPUs…

@82mhz With software I use any modern laptop would probably last forever on single battery charge. But that alone isn't enough to justify their replacement.
And I don't think I'd go with Apple hardware today, I don't even use my Apple hardware with Apple software anymore as I don't like it. If I hit the market today, I'll pick something by Purism, System'76, Framework, Tuxedo… There are a lot of companies that make computers with Linux in mind.

@m0xee I agree with you 100%. I'm typing this on a 2013 Macbook Air with Linux on it, and it is still adequate for most things I do.

I always liked the design of Apple hardware and I also have an 2012 Macbook Pro and one of those old plastic Macbooks here (that is what this question is about btw ;) ), on top of a few iPods.

But I hate the Apple policy of locking everything down as much as possible to keep total control over the hardware, and the fact that they're actively killing repairability of their devices... there's no way I'm buying anything from them, even if the M-Chips are just ridiculously powerful.

Purism, Framework, Fairphone when it comes to mobile... those are companys that are more aligned with my values and that also produce great hardware. That's where my money would go if I wasn't a cheap bastard who buys everything used on ebay anyway ;)

@82mhz @m0xee Oh yeah, I took over ownership if my wife's unused 2017 Macbook Air and put MX on it. It is now my lounging around on the couch machine.

@supernova @m0xee
That's how I use mine too ;) Right now actually 😄
