And Politico didn't even give any extensive coverage of what's happening in Russia — or at least that is the impression I had reading them about 4 years ago. I might be wrong though, I didn't pay much attention since.
To me it looks like they are cracking down indiscriminately on anyone who's even remotely not inline with the state: opposition activists, foreign journalists, even those who are mostly loyal, but allow themselves some criticism.

And do so rather demonstratively — most likely to show locals that no unloyalty would be tolerated.
Luke Harding's book "Mafia State" gave me an amazing insight on what's it like to be a foreign journalist who isn't welcome. Those were much more vegetarian times so to say, but he did touch all the wrong topics, especially the Georgia invasion — he was practically forced out of the country: first by various intimidation techniques and eventually also with visa termination 😩
