I pity the peoples who buy a new Laptop and will actually keep that default OS and settings that came with it...

Must be awful.

@kingu@mstdn.social oh my god and the bloatware, imagine using a stock HP laptop with McAfee... Many such cases

@dushman@den.raccoon.quest @kingu@mstdn.social bro i am not gonna neuter my 3080 just to run le elite os 🤢, my favorite game doesn't even work right in wine. When win 10 is no longer supported I'm jumping ship though :DamnFemaleKid:

@hdtv@bodybag.zip @kingu@mstdn.social
I've been using only Linux and BSD for ages now. Everything I want to run works lol.

@hdtv@bodybag.zip @kingu@mstdn.social
This server runs Alpine. It has the holy trinity of busybox, musl and openrc.

@hdtv@bodybag.zip @kingu@mstdn.social
Btw since it uses busybox for its coreutils it's Linux without the GNU lol

@kingu@mstdn.social @hdtv@bodybag.zip
Though I'd only recommend Alpine if you are experienced with *nix systems

@hdtv@bodybag.zip @kingu@mstdn.social
Well if you ever need help with server issues you can hit me up and I'll probably come up with a solution

@dushman@den.raccoon.quest @kingu@mstdn.social Ok I'll be honest I use ubuntu-server and not debian but when I tell ppl that they shit on me :aqua_cry:

@hdtv @kingu @dushman seems fair, i don't get the purpose of ubuntu when literally anything else exists

hell even their default installer is worse than a GUI driven one like what debian or fedora have

@7666@comp.lain.la @kingu@mstdn.social @dushman@den.raccoon.quest what is like, the main upside to using something other than it? My CPU usage is low, install is small, there's no gui, wide support. Idk it hasn't given me a single problem whatsoever on any of my containers

@hdtv @kingu @dushman less corporate trash in the image, less stupid naming schemes (why are they all fucking .04 anyway), easier installer, generally wider FOSS only support
@hdtv @kingu @dushman yeah there is when it inevitably needs 40 config files injected at runtime for proper config at boot and another container just to proxy that container and another container for LE to run properly and yet another layer of NAT in between and bla bla bla bla

@7666@comp.lain.la @kingu@mstdn.social @dushman@den.raccoon.quest "oooh containers are too complicated, but also I won't use the easy button 😭"

@hdtv @kingu @dushman unnecessary complexity is the killer of infra

a GUI just adds more complexity because you have no clue what that thing is doing behind the scenes so good luck debugging it when your button magically breaks
@7666 @hdtv @dushman @kingu >unnecessary complexity is the killer of infra
Hey wait a sec thats just like what a container is :cirno_heh:
@dcc @hdtv @dushman @kingu there is also a security argument to be made here in that sharing host resources such as the kernel and OS has a higher chance of host escape/compromise, vs traditional full virt where there's much less attack surface for each VM to hit the hypervisor somehow

think about the latest speculative execution CPU bugs as an example
@dushman @7666 @kingu @hdtv Sir not everyone can afford to have many vm's nor is vm's the best solution for everything
@dushman @7666 @kingu @hdtv >containers
Well no becuase they dont really act as vm's as already said by 7666.
Follow

@dcc
They were originally a thing for hosting providers to reduce costs and provide their customers with *some* isolation, how they have made it into a thing used by people who self-host is beyond me 🤷
Ease of deployment — maybe, but other than that, very few advantages.
@hdtv @7666 @dushman @kingu

@m0xee @hdtv @7666 @dushman @kingu >Ease of deployment
I dont agree on that point, but yea they are not for a cookout on sunday :door_mat:

@dcc@annihilation.social @m0xee@social.librem.one @hdtv@bodybag.zip @7666@comp.lain.la @kingu@mstdn.social
I'm curious why you had a different experience though. I was able to put up owncast in 5 minutes as an example so I'd say it can really speed up deployment.

@dushman @7666 @kingu @hdtv There is nothing about a container that makes it easier to setup.

@dcc@annihilation.social @7666@comp.lain.la @kingu@mstdn.social @hdtv@bodybag.zip
Not having to worry about any dependencies/dep versions not easily available on your host system for one is very nice. They have a preconfigured environment tailored towards running one specific thing so that sidesteps certain issues.

@dcc@annihilation.social @7666@comp.lain.la @kingu@mstdn.social @hdtv@bodybag.zip
It's just like a quality of life thing if you know what I mean. At least I have found them to make administration less of a chore.

@dushman @7666 @kingu @hdtv >Not having to worry about any dependencies/dep versions
I use slackware so i rarely face these issuses
>They have a preconfigured environment tailored towards running one specific thing so that sidesteps certain issues.
What isssues?

@dcc@annihilation.social @7666@comp.lain.la @kingu@mstdn.social @hdtv@bodybag.zip
E.g two services depending on two different versions of one other dependency. Shit like that.

@dushman @7666 @kingu @hdtv You already went back on your word :officer_mclovin:
