i thought reasonable people were maybe running that instance, but their rules are as long as an EULA and they block instances for reasons such as "federates with instance X", "conspiracies" and "cryptocurrency".

also, "free speech", but i understand this is synonym for "fascism" these days?

@thor
free speech -> wrong think allowed

When I was a child so many of the groups today were making the argument of "so what if you don't agree with us? Why can't you tolerate us!"

Which has turned into, "If you don't agree with us, you must be silenced."

@hazlin many innocent users sign up for such instances and get caught up in this nightmarish political war, completely unaware that their admins are blindfolding them. it goes far beyond just blocking trolls and spammers and well into blocking anyone whose attitudes the admins don't like, effectively trying to act like the Fediverse Thought Police.

Yet another reminder that tool designed to counter obvious bad actors ALWAYS turns into a tool for political censorship — no exceptions: be it the state, commercial entity or tightly-knit community 🤷

@m0xee @hazlin in a way, censorship is the natural state of human beings. we *want* to silence voices we don't like.

not doing that is what takes restraint and self-control.

@thor
Agree, but we are talking defederation here. Admins aren't mere mortals for which it's acceptable to act on their personal preference, they are like representatives of the community of that instance.
When someone blocks whatever they don't like personally for their account — no one has a problem with that.
So yeah, it would be nice for admins to have some of that sweet restraint 😅
