@thor Old Twitter was readable without an account, is this thing like that? Then how is it different from new Twitter?
Besides I will never believe official numbers in this case. They can just fill it with already existing Instagram accounts and no one will ever find out they are bullshiting us.
And I don't care if this gets genuinely popular, why? There are already Facebook and Instagram, they have huge user bases 🤷
@thor That also wasn't to be unexpected: they have ad budget and a huge one, they can pay devs for those apps, I still don't think it's about "People choosing Facebook", they just go the shortest route. Some company might have invested in Masto and that would attract a lot of people, would we like it? Probably not. If we want people to universally value privacy and non-commercialization, of course it won't happen overnight like that, just because Twitter went to shit 🤷
@dcc @thor @m0xee I remember long time ago Facebook Messenger used to support XMPP protocol and there were so many 3rd party Facebook Messenger apps? Where are they now? they deprecated the protocol a long time ago. Ones they attract enough users by marketing themselves as that they support open protocols they deprecate it.. Google does the same.
@safiuddinkhan @m0xee @thor I think, we can call Mastodon already done. To keep Pleroma and others alive, that’s the goal. Maybe ActivityPub has to be forked and we will happily get rid of both Zuckerberg’s Trojan horse and Rochko’s drag queen’s heaven.
@VikingKong @thor @m0xee He made a great point and i love it... that these corporations promise one thing and then don't even keep that promise so why should be trust them as they are so inconsistent? Same situation here.. all corporations like IBM, Microsoft, Canonical, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, etc are untrustworthy.. Who knows what gonna happen when they sell out and merge what gonna happen with their products we use and its a common practice from them.
@m0xee the point was how slowly Mastodon - often suggested as a Twitter alternative - is growing by comparison. it's been there the entire time yet only has a fraction of the signups. see discussion with Leonie in this thread though.
