I really don't understand this Fediverse phenomenon of people wanting extremely niche specific topical instances to exist upon---or, why people want to make extremely niche specific topical instances.

I only want to make my account on a Dutch-speaking instance about historical "age of sail" boat architecture

The Fediverse aren't forums. Considering the entire concept of the Fediverse is federation, most instances should be general-purpose, widely accessible "nodes" maintained to provide network access to the greatest selection of users. Similar to email or something.

@adiz The main point is discovery IMO. When you already know the ins and outs you no longer need that, you'd probably stick with the one with moderation policy that suits you.
But when you are new to this it might be important as discovery is inferior to what most people are used to. TWKN might be overwhelming, local timeline would do a better job, thus picking instance that matches your interests might be important 🤷
