Whew:

Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation from the instance owners.
Meta positions itself as "savior", because espescially the big instances have a very strong financial pressure. Users take it for granted that someone else is paying for everything.
In these contracts, Meta also specifies the rules regarding moderation.

So, basically, Meta intends to essentially do what Twitter BlueSky is doing with "trusted nodes" to off-load hosting, except via ActivityPub as the protocol and commandeering larger Mastodon instances to be their analog of "trusted nodes". By providing "financial compensation" in return for both adhering to Meta's moderation requirements and accepting federation with Meta content (including advertisements), Meta will virtually commandeer these instances.

I've said before, this concept of "hosting instances is expensive" is a non-issue. It's a faux problem. Hosting
very large centralized instances is expensive---hosting small instances is very cheap! The Fediverse is supposed to be comprised of many small instances, hence the entire concept and purpose of decentralization and federation. There's not much utility in federated networking if the entire network is just a small oligarchy of large instances!

@adiz Wasn't there some EU legislation to make social networks interoperable — maybe embracing AP is just their response to that.
I'm not the one who likes that, all this endeavor reeks of problems in the future, but I don't see the reason to brace for impact either. Dark Fedi will remain safe anyway 🤷

@m0xee@social.librem.one "Dark Fedi" has always been the original, and genuine, Fediverse experience all along---and it will remain so even as Meta and other corporate entities start partnering up with BigMastodon.
