I can't imagine what the etymology is, I was quite surprised when I learned it's called that in the US. We have a similar one on Russia: guinea pigs are called "морские свинки" which can be translated as sea pigs. Okay, the pig part is familiar, but I bet they can't swim! Capybaras can and they do look like giant guinea pigs, it might have made sense, but we don't have any capybaras here 😂
