K6-2 was the CPU that made me learn that compiler optimizations make a difference. On K6-2 for example "mov AX, 0" was faster than "xor AX, AX" — that is what most used to zero out the register, so just rebuilding with -march=k6-2 was giving you sizeable performance gains. In QuakeForge on heavy scenes it was 22 FPS vs 17 FPS — nothing to sneer at! In integer maths the improvement was 20-25% on average, then there was 3D Now!

@m0xee @Nishi Ohh I remember those old AMD processors! We had one machine with maybe a K6-2 or K5-2, where I installed Windows Millenium Edition, that had to be reinstalled every 3 months or otherwise would go absolute unusable.
