@Rasp

And while we are at it... Why is there a need to make a difference between single, divorced and widowed?

I am a single with a child. It should not matter at all, if I was married before or not.

@wolkenblume
Divorced means you have alimony and maybe child support.
I think widowed means you might get life insurance.

@Paradox

Which is all speculation.
And none of anyone's business.

@wolkenblume I mean if you want the money, you tell them that.

I have no idea if you can just say you're single and leave it at that, but also most people probably won't turn down extra money.

I hear what you're saying, but some stats they collect because they do useful stuff with it and not just cuz they're curious.

@Paradox

I don't know what this particular form belongs to. My comments are therefore generic. In a couple of contexts it might be legit. But too many institutions and companies put their noses in stuff that should be none of their business.

Not every woman gets alimony and not every man has to pay alimony after a divorce. And child support depends on having a child not on having been married. Here at least. If they have a legit interest in my income components, I share those anyway.

There always are corner cases, but pigeonholing works 90% of time and if they didn't promise personal approach they just cut corners like that.
