@thor Why don't you use the old trick of making the directory used as mount point read-only? When the actual mount happens, it becomes write-accessible and voila!
Of course when the underlying file system fails (in case of network errors if it's a remote one), it can't just magically disappear as there are processes that have files open and that have to get killed before unmount can happen, even forced one 🤷
