In my opinion, criticisms of mastodon being unusable by the general public are over blown.
@codehag I agree. Also the whole thing OMG what server do I choose thing basically is also exaggerated. Pick one, it basically doesn't make much of a difference

It does! The instance I'm on doesn't have neither federated, nor local timeline and I had to browse the comments and look at what others boost to find someone new to follow. I didn't even realize what everyone was talking about: "Federated timeline, what does that even mean?"
It doesn't even have DMs, but I've learned to live with all that 😊
