After my fedi network widened more and more, my feed is too much to handle. It takes more than an hour to read everything in the morning, which is what people post overnight. Obviously that's not a good idea as it is a huge time sink, so what do you people with a lot of following do?
I read what I read and don't worry too much about what I miss.
So most like your first option, though I do read a good amount of it.
If I am offline for a while, I just check my Notifications first.

Same here, I start with the most recent posts and if I have lots of time to spare, read what was posted in the past.
