Let us not forget that it is nothing like tech in its level of unambiguity and precision, and likely never will be.
Even DSM is a good place to start. Russia is way behind on accepting disorders like this and treating them so I know the other approach quite well, when society treats those as just personality traits: "You're just lazy and need a good kick up your butt, get your shit together!"
It helps other people get what they want from you, but it rarely helps you be content.

@m0xee @thor IME it's treated as gospel and helps people permanently identify with their disorder, to the point where they list it beside their age, occupation, and pronouns in their Twitter bio.

Acceptance might be part of the path to recovery but when one incorporates it into their identity, it really seems like they've accepted that they cannot recover/change. "It's just the brain chemistry you were born with" as if the mind is just electrons flying around synapses.

@m0xee @thor it's a materialist's wet dream, and this mentality, along with its associated dogmas, fuels the pharmaceutical industry.

Throw spaghetti-pills at the wall-brain and see what sticks, and charge >$60/hr for the privilege

There are a lot of cases when it turns into lifestyle and it's wrong. But it's the new thing, like you said, there is commercial interest — it's inevitable.
I believe society will adapt and learn not to overdo it.
If you only think of your survival these disorders don't exist as their influence is negligible, but if we want humans to be capable of high level activities, we've got to tend to it, pretending that there are no "brain chemistry disorders" gets us nowhere.

The pills should only be used as a band-aid that allows you to adjust your lifestyle/environment/whatever not something you are going to take all your life. E.g. COVID caused anxiety in a lot of people, why turn your life into a nightmare when you can treat the anxiety?
I've seen a few cases of recovery when people either stopped taking pills or learned to depend on them only in case of emergency. It is possible, it's not always that bad.
