@safiuddinkhan I switched to Linux in Windows XP I was fucking tired with the "autorun" crap in the usb. I had to deal with malware constantly so I decided to try something more secure.

Now in moderns versions of Windows the malware is still there and it's official by Microsoft.

@jrballesteros05 @safiuddinkhan@fosstodon.org I think you could just disable autorun with some registry setting and I believe it was there prior to XP.

@m0xee @safiuddinkhan yeah, I remember I used to do it on my machine but I also used to keep an USB to share documents and the problem was externals machines. Even if you disable the autorun windows xp was absolutely shit in security and it was so normal to see many machines infected with malware.

@jrballesteros05 Yeah! AFAIK there was a bug in how Windows handled jpeg images when generating thumbnails. You could use a specially cooked image to run arbitrary code.
I believe it wasn't even fixed when Windows XP went into the limited support status. MS just advised everyone to turn off displaying thumbnails for all folders 🤣
